 US strikes Iranian-backed targets in Syria, China's former premier dies, and Maine shooting suspect captured

The US military launched airstrikes on two facilities in eastern Syria used by Iranian-backed militias, in retaliation for recent drone attacks on US bases in Iraq and Syria. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said the strikes were "necessary, appropriate, and deliberate action" to deter future attacks.In China, Li Keqiang, the country's top economic official for a decade, died of a sudden heart attack at the age of 68³. Li was the premier from 2013 to 2022 and was once seen as a potential successor to President Xi Jinping, but was sidelined as Xi consolidated his power.

In Maine, a massive manhunt for a suspect in a shooting that killed 18 people in Lewiston ended after he was captured on Friday. The suspect, identified as James Smith, had escaped from a hospital where he was being treated for a gunshot wound. He was found hiding in a wooded area near his last known residence.
